Sustainability is not only a trend – to our minds it is a decision. In furniture design it increasingly turns into specific materials, technologies and an approach to production. The NUWA collection came about on exactly that principle: honest joinery meeting an innovative approach to recycled materials from Plastic Guys.

An award for the NUWA collection, created
with the makers at Plastic Guys

The collection is built on recycled panels made from plastic waste – from the car industry or electronics, for instance. The material gets a second life as design boards developed by Plastic Guys, a manufacturer that came up with 100% recyclable panels with a unique structure, colour and high durability.

That makes them a material in their own right for contemporary interior design – not an alternative but a new standard. Which is why we chose them and built a local collaboration between two companies that share an emphasis on sustainability, innovation and production that means something.

We added precise engineering and joinery – solid oak for the chair, oak veneer for the table.

Two worlds meeting: craft and innovation

NUWA came about with Plastic Guys, each side bringing what it does best:

• Woodever – precise production and engineering know-how.
• Plastic Guys – material development and experiments with texture.

That combination made it possible to create products with aesthetic value and a clear idea behind them. The collection is also designed as a basic table set for an interior – a dining table, a dining chair and a coffee table. Each combines wood with recycled plastics and can be adapted to order – from dimensions to the specific decor.

NUWA shows where interior design can go, from the choice of materials to how they are worked. The set is proof that a new product can carry a great many ideas and approaches that then show up in the interior itself.

NUWA does not end with three pieces. With Mendel University in Brno we continue to develop further interior elements that connect traditional craft with innovative materials and give room to a new generation of joiners and designers.
